Guiding Principles

There are a few things that all great lawyers do. These are the same principles that guide the Law Office of James Newell.

First off, great lawyers show their clients, through their words and actions over a period of weeks or years, that they can be trusted to approach every client’s legal issues with the same focus and determination as they would their own. Open communication built on trust is important because only when a lawyer has a sufficiently nuanced understanding of the client’s goals and concerns can the lawyer work with the client to ensure the approach taken is fully aligned with the client’s priorities

Secondly, great lawyers are experts in their fields of practice. They are smart, critical thinkers, they have an overarching understanding as well as very detailed knowledge of the law, and they have carefully honed their instincts for solving nonstandard legal problems. They know how to apply the law to the facts succinctly without glossing over important details and they have a healthy respect for the unforgiving nature of many procedural rules and deadlines. Great lawyers are confident in their judgment but are quick to look to reliable sources when points of law or fact need clarification.

Thirdly, great lawyers make the law accessible to their clients. They are aware of their roles as interpreters who must translate the often stilted and obscure language found in statutes and cases into plain English that people without formal legal training can understand and appreciate.

Finally, despite the inherently detailed nature of legal work, great lawyers never lose sight of the big picture. In David Simon’s television series, The Wire, Wendell Pierce’s character, Bunk, posits that it’s not so much rubber gloves that detectives need to do their jobs well but, rather, their “soft eyes” because if “You got soft eyes you can see the whole thing. You got hard eyes, you’re staring at the same tree, missing the forest.” This same skill, developed and sharpened on a daily basis, is invaluable when navigating legal terrain. It’s one of the foremost reasons why great lawyers always have been and always will be relevant, despite living in a digital age awash with information.

About This Website

With the rise of the internet, information has become prolific. So prolific, in fact, that it often becomes impossible for non-professionals to parse out what information is valuable and what information is worthless (or, sometimes, harmful). This is very often true of internet-sourced information related to the law, which is routinely contradictory and confusing. On this website, information related to the law is laid out as clearly and plainly as possible, generally focusing on broad concepts rather than specific applications. While it is designed to be helpful, the information on this website is no substitute for professional advice, representation and/or drafting tailored to the specifics of your situation and, of course, does not constitute legal advice or create a lawyer-client relationship.

If you need professional assistance related to a legal matter and are looking for an estate planning, small business law, asset protection, and real estate lawyer in Boulder with a results-oriented approach tailored to your matter’s specific needs, contact Newell Law. We have the expertise and knowledge to ensure your matter is handled properly.
